Amcor, a leading global consumer packaging company, wanted to rethink its enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications and platform following the acquisition of flexible packaging firm Bemis. This would help it to improve operational efficiencies and overall business agility.

Key to the project was its mission-critical SAP HANA database. Amcor was confident that the move would also contribute to its company-wide optimization program to drive cost reduction, while maximizing business value.

With the acquisition of Bemis, Amcor has more than 47,000 employees working together across more than 230 sites in over 40 countries. It recognized that digital transformation was the key to increasing productivity and eliminating the additional cost of a legacy platform.

We were looking for a global vendor that could simplify our operations, while ensuring security, performance and 24/7 accessibility to our mission-critical applications and data. Orange Business has fulfilled our remit, enabling us to better balance workloads in the cloud, and providing us with an effective solution that offers the flexibility we needed.

Designed for enhanced agility

Orange displayed its ability to provide an end-to-end digital value chain during the proposal stage and was engaged to redesign Amcor’s ERP landscape. This included integrating the business-critical ERP application with Amcor’s existing global data center and network infrastructure.

Amcor had already deployed an Orange hybrid cloud solution consolidating both its private cloud managed infrastructure and global public cloud services under a previous agreement. For the public services, which includes hosting IT infrastructure applications, Amcor uses the Orange Flexible Engine solution based on OpenStack technology.

The new agreement provides Amcor with a fully managed end-to-end hybrid cloud solution that includes the operating system, database, disaster recovery and backup. In addition, Orange has upgraded and combined its existing data center environment by integrating Amcor’s legacy ERP workloads, including SAP HANA and relevant workloads from the acquisition.

Fully managed end-to-end hybrid cloud solution

Amcor’s workloads have been balanced in different locations to benefit from operational efficiencies and agility. Orange has migrated Oracle database workloads to private cloud, while SAP workloads use the SAP HANA applications service on Flexible Engine. This ensures business continuity with complete flexibility. The design will provide Amcor with an easy migration to SAP S/4HANA, which is mandatory by 2027.

In addition, Orange has moved other corporate applications to Flexible Engine. The entire hybrid cloud has been integrated with Amcor’s existing Orange Business VPN to securely manage growing Internet traffic, while optimizing cost and performance.

A single point of contact

Orange has simplified Amcor’s global operations with a single point of contact and accessibility to mission-critical applications 24/7. This also reduces overall costs and increases flexibility to satisfy growing business demands.
